Background of the Study
Household food diversity refers to the variety of foods consumed within a household, which is crucial for ensuring adequate nutrition, particularly for growing children. A diverse diet provides essential micronutrients that contribute to proper growth, cognitive development, and immune function (FAO, 2024). In Jigawa State, malnutrition remains a public health concern, with many children experiencing stunted growth due to inadequate nutrient intake. While efforts have been made to improve food security and nutrition education, the relationship between household food diversity and child growth outcomes needs further investigation.
Statement of the Problem
Malnutrition continues to affect many children in Jigawa State, with limited dietary diversity being a contributing factor. Despite various nutrition intervention programs, children still experience growth deficiencies due to poor access to diverse food sources. There is a need to evaluate the impact of household food diversity on child growth to inform policies aimed at improving nutrition and reducing malnutrition rates in the region.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the level of household food diversity in Jigawa State.
2. To examine the relationship between household food diversity and child growth indicators.
3. To identify factors influencing household food diversity and child nutrition.
Research Questions
1. What is the level of household food diversity in Jigawa State?
2. How does household food diversity impact child growth and nutritional status?
3. What factors influence household food diversity and child nutrition?
Research Hypotheses
1. Higher household food diversity leads to better child growth outcomes.
2. Households with low food diversity have a higher prevalence of child malnutrition.
3. Socioeconomic and environmental factors significantly influence household food diversity.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on households with children under five in Jigawa State. Limitations may include self-reported dietary intake data and seasonal variations affecting food availability.
Definitions of Terms
• Household Food Diversity: The variety of food groups consumed by a household over a specific period.
• Child Growth Indicators: Measurements such as height-for-age (stunting), weight-for-age (underweight), and weight-for-height (wasting).
• Malnutrition: A condition resulting from inadequate, excessive, or imbalanced nutrient intake.
